SYNOPSIS

In the summer after his graduation, George moves to a new city with his girlfriend Maggie to start their life together and follow their dreams. As evening falls on their first night, they make love in their new flat. And afterwards, they stand together watching the sun drop over their new world.

By Autumn, they find that life is proving harder than they had imagined. They have been unable to find work and their lack of prospects and shortage of cash puts a strain on their relationship. George feels pressure from his father to get a real job and further pressure from the Job Centre who, under the government’s new agenda to tighten benefit schemes, refuse to support him in taking an internship and actively encourage him to take any low level, unskilled work available.

George’s struggle becomes visible in his increasingly aggressive behaviour towards Maggie who shirks any responsibility and thinks only of herself. After another of their arguments, George finds Maggie at the beach where they share a joint and George announces his decision to come off benefits and ‘make life happen.’

Once winter comes around, George finds himself working all hours at a run-down pub. Things aren’t all bad though as Maggie has been offered an acting position and their relationship seems a little stronger. Maggie meets George during his lunch break and shakes his foundations when she reveals that she is pregnant. She returns home, allowing him some time for the news to sink in.

Maggie waits up for George to come home, but when he doesn’t return, she calls the pub where the pretty barmaid tells Maggie that he’s busy and will call back. Maggie falls asleep on the bed and wakes a couple of hours later to discover that George is still out. She tries the pub again, but this time gets no answer.

Maggie goes to the pub where she finds that George has finished work and is drinking with the pretty barmaid.
As they walk home together, George explodes in anger and desperation resulting in him lashing out at Maggie and punching her in the face.

George wakes alone in bed during the early hours of the morning. He finds Maggie asleep on the sofa. He wakes her gently and helps her into bed.
